Driving from Cape Town to Namibia — or into Botswana, Lesotho or Eswatini — is one of southern Africa's great adventures, and you can do it in a rental car. But you can't simply drive a South African hire car across a border: you need the rental company's written permission, specific documents for the vehicle, and an understanding of the fees and insurance on the other side. This guide explains how cross-border car hire works, what the border officials will ask for and how to plan the classic Cape Town to Windhoek drive.
Which countries you can drive to
South Africa belongs to the Southern African Customs Union (SACU) with Namibia, Botswana, Lesotho and Eswatini, which makes temporary vehicle crossings between them comparatively simple. These are the four countries Mylz authorises for cross-border travel.
| Country | Popular route from Cape Town | Allowed with Mylz |
|---|---|---|
| Namibia | N7 to Vioolsdrif / Noordoewer, then B1 to Windhoek | Yes, with a cross-border letter |
| Botswana | Via Upington or Gauteng to the Kgalagadi or Gaborone | Yes, with a cross-border letter |
| Lesotho | Long-distance; usually combined with the Free State or Drakensberg | Yes, with a cross-border letter |
| Eswatini | Usually combined with Kruger and Mpumalanga | Yes, with a cross-border letter |
| Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Zambia and beyond | — | Not permitted |
Taking a rental car across a border without authorisation voids your cover — any damage, theft or breakdown outside South Africa would be entirely at your cost — and the car may be held at the border.
Fees and insurance
Expect three types of cost on a cross-border trip:
- The rental company's cross-border fee — R1,500 per rental at Mylz, covering the letter, documents and admin.
- Road-use charges at the border. Each neighbouring country charges foreign-registered vehicles an entry fee, road permit or road toll — Namibia's is a Cross-Border Charge collected for its Road Fund. Amounts change and are set by each country, so carry some cash in the local currency or rand as well as a card, in case card machines are down.
- Insurance. Without a cross-border letter, rental cover does not apply outside South Africa. With one, confirm with us exactly which cover applies in each country before you go. Some countries also require compulsory third-party insurance bought at the border — keep the receipt with your documents.
Documents at the border
Keep these together in one folder, and make photocopies stored separately:
| Document | Notes |
|---|---|
| Passports for everyone in the car | Check visa requirements for your nationality for each country, and that you have enough blank pages. |
| Driving licence (and IDP if required) | The same licence rules apply as in South Africa; an IDP is wise in Namibia and Botswana. |
| Letter of authority from the rental company | Original, naming the driver(s), vehicle and countries. |
| Certified copy of the vehicle registration certificate | Supplied with the letter. |
| Rental agreement | Must match the names on the letter. |
| ZA distinguishing sticker | A "ZA" sticker on the back of the vehicle identifies a South African-registered car abroad. Check it is fitted at handover. |
| Proof of insurance / border receipts | Keep every receipt from road-use charges and border insurance until you're home. |
Also check each country's in-car equipment rules — warning triangles, a reflective vest and a fire extinguisher are commonly required or recommended. And remember the same South African rules about speed and alcohol apply: Namibia and Botswana have their own limits and roadblocks.
Best vehicles for a cross-border trip
- Toyota Hilux 2.8 GD-6 Legend RS 4x4 — the classic choice for Namibia: diesel range, high clearance, a lockable load bay with tonneau cover and a diff lock for sand. Browse our double-cab bakkies.
- Toyota Fortuner 2.8 GD-6 VX 4x4 — seven seats, low-range 4x4 and an enclosed boot, so luggage stays dust-free on gravel. See SUV and 4x4 hire in Cape Town.
- Ford Ranger Raptor — a petrol V6 with desert-grade suspension. Great fun, but fuel stops are further apart in rural Namibia, so plan carefully.
Cross-border authorisation is vehicle-specific, so confirm the car is approved when you request your letter. Sedans and low-slung luxury cars are not suitable for Namibia's gravel roads, even where tar connects the main towns.
Cape Town to Windhoek: the route
It's roughly 1,480 km by road from Cape Town to Windhoek — around 14–15 hours of driving, best split over two or three days.
| Leg | Distance | Drive time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cape Town → Clanwilliam (N7) | ≈ 230 km | 2.5 h | Cederberg mountains; spring flowers in the Namaqualand season |
| Clanwilliam → Springbok (N7) | ≈ 330 km | 3.5 h | Last big town before the border; fill up |
| Springbok → Vioolsdrif border (N7) | ≈ 120 km | 1.25 h | The N7 ends at the Orange River |
| Noordoewer → Keetmanshoop (B1) | ≈ 300 km | 3 h | Detour west for the Fish River Canyon |
| Keetmanshoop → Windhoek (B1) | ≈ 500 km | 5 h | Via Mariental; long, straight tar |
Vioolsdrif/Noordoewer is the main crossing on this route. Border post hours can change with holidays, flooding and operational needs, so check the current hours with the South African and Namibian authorities before you travel, and plan to cross in daylight. An alternative crossing is Nakop/Ariamsvlei via Upington.
