Car hire in Cape Town: your questions

Everything you need to know before your handover. If it isn't here, our concierge is a message away.

Booking & handover

How do I book a car in Cape Town?

Choose meet & greet at Cape Town International or delivery to one of our Cape Town zones, pick your dates and vehicle, add any extras and cover, then pay securely online. Your confirmation and booking reference arrive by email and in your Mylz account.

Do you have a rental desk or office?

No. Mylz Rentals has no counter to queue at. Your host meets you in the arrivals hall at Cape Town International, or delivers the car to your hotel, home or office in our delivery zones and collects it from you at the end.

What are your handover hours?

Airport meet & greet runs from 05:00 to 23:00 daily, and delivery and collection from 07:00 to 20:00. Handovers outside these hours can be arranged in advance for an after-hours fee shown in your quote.

What if my flight is delayed?

Add your flight number when you book. We track arrivals and your host adjusts to your landing time, with no extra charge for a late flight.

Can I book for someone else?

Yes, but the main driver must be the person whose licence and identity are verified, and the credit card used for the deposit must be in the main driver's name.

Is the car I see the car I'll get?

Most vehicles are booked by model "or similar" within the same category. Where a listing shows "Guaranteed model", you receive exactly that make and model.

Our cars

Who owns the cars?

Our fleet is owner-supplied and Mylz-managed: vetted private owners place their vehicles with us, and Mylz Rentals handles everything else. You rent from, pay and deal only with Mylz.

How do you keep the cars to standard?

Every car is inspected, serviced and maintained to our standard, insured for rental use, and cleaned and checked before every handover. Cars that fall short are taken off the road until they meet it.

Requirements & documents

What documents do I need?

South African residents need a valid SA driver's licence card and a smart ID card or green barcoded ID. International visitors need a passport and a valid driver's licence printed in English with a photograph, or an International Driving Permit (IDP) carried with their home licence.

Do I need a credit card?

Yes. A credit card in the main driver's name is required for the refundable security deposit. Debit, cheque, prepaid and virtual cards cannot be used for the deposit.

What is the minimum age to hire a car?

The minimum age is 21 for Compact cars, 23 for Executive, SUV, Electric, Bakkie and People Carrier categories, and 25 for Luxury. Some flagship models, such as the Porsche 911, require drivers aged 28 or older with five years' licence.

How long must I have held my licence?

At least one year for Compact, two years for most categories and three years for Luxury. The exact requirement is shown on every vehicle page.

How does online verification work?

After booking, upload your ID or passport, licence and a quick selfie in your account. Verification is completed before you arrive, so the handover takes minutes rather than a queue.

Deposits & payment

How much is the security deposit?

Deposits range from R2,500 to R15,000 depending on the vehicle category, and are lower with Signature or Black Cover. The exact amount is shown before you pay.

When is my deposit released?

The hold is released once the vehicle is returned and checked, typically within 24 hours. Your bank may take 7–14 working days to reflect the release.

Are your prices VAT-inclusive?

Yes. Every rate on the site includes 15% VAT. Delivery or meet & greet fees, extras and optional cover are shown in your quote before you pay.

Insurance & cover

Is insurance included?

Every rental includes Essential Cover: collision and theft damage waivers, third-party liability and 24/7 roadside assistance. An excess applies; reduce it to R7,500 with Signature Cover or to zero with Black Cover.

What isn't covered?

Damage caused by negligence, driving under the influence, unauthorised drivers, off-road use in non-4x4 vehicles, or breaches of the rental agreement is not covered by any waiver. Personal belongings are not covered.

What should I do in an accident?

Make sure everyone is safe, call our 24/7 emergency line, and report the accident at the nearest SAPS station within 24 hours to obtain a case number. Do not admit liability.

Fuel & kilometres

What is the fuel policy?

Full-to-full. Return the car with a full tank to avoid refuelling charges, or choose Prepaid Fuel and return it at any level. Electric vehicles should be returned with at least 70% charge.

Is mileage unlimited?

Electric vehicles include unlimited kilometres. Other vehicles include a daily allowance of 200–300 km, pooled over your rental, which comfortably covers Cape Point or a Winelands day trip. Extra kilometres are charged at the rate on the vehicle page.

Tolls & traffic fines

Are there e-tolls in Cape Town?

No. There are no e-tolls in the Western Cape. The only toll you are likely to meet near Cape Town is Chapman's Peak Drive, paid at the plaza by card or cash; the Huguenot Tunnel on the N1 towards Paarl is also tolled.

What happens if I get a traffic fine?

Fines issued during your rental are your responsibility. We redirect the fine to you as the driver (nominating you under the Criminal Procedure Act or the AARTO Act, where applicable) and charge an administration fee per fine.

Long trips & cross-border

Can I take the car on the Garden Route?

Yes. You can drive anywhere in South Africa on tarred and well-maintained gravel roads. For one-way trips ending outside Cape Town, ask us for a quote first.

Can I take the car across the border?

Selected vehicles may travel to Namibia, Botswana, Eswatini and Lesotho with our cross-border letter of authority. Request it at least 72 hours before your handover; a cross-border fee applies. Border fees, permits and third-party insurance required by neighbouring countries are payable by you.

Changes & cancellations

Can I change my booking?

Yes. Amend dates, vehicle or extras from your account, subject to availability. Any price difference is shown before you confirm.

What is your cancellation policy?

Cancel free of charge up to 48 hours before your handover. Cancellations within 48 hours incur a 25% fee; no-shows are charged in full. Refunds go back to the original payment method.
