Car Hire in Stellenbosch, Delivered to Your Door

Our Cape Winelands zone covers Stellenbosch and the surrounding farms (including the Banhoek, Jonkershoek and Devon valleys and the Helderberg slopes), Paarl, Franschhoek and Somerset West. Car rental delivery anywhere in the zone is a flat zone fee per handover, VAT included, daily from morning to evening.

• Wine estates and lodges: we hand over at reception or your cottage. Give us the name the gate should expect.
• Hotels and guesthouses in the historic centre around Dorp Street and Church Street, where we can meet you at the entrance or in the guest parking.
• Stellenbosch University: visiting academics, conference delegates and parents settling students in can take delivery at a residence, faculty or conference venue.
• Somerset West and the Helderberg: homes, estates and golf estates, including gated communities with access arranged in advance.

Stellenbosch has more than a hundred wineries within a short drive of town, and it's tempting to fit in four or five a day. South Africa's legal limit is a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.05 g per 100 ml, and a few tastings can take you over it. Alcohol roadblocks do take place in the Winelands, particularly on weekends.

A popular mix is self-drive for the week and a private chauffeur for one big tasting day in a Vito or S-Class.

• Helshoogte Pass (R310): climbs out of Stellenbosch past Tokara and Delaire Graff with views over the Banhoek valley, then drops to Pniel and on to Franschhoek. About 30 km, and the most beautiful way to get there. Continue to car hire in Franschhoek for local tips.
• Franschhoek Pass (R45): from Franschhoek, climb towards Villiersdorp for views back over the valley. Combine it with Helshoogte for a half-day loop.
• Stellenbosch to Paarl (R44 and R45): past the estates of the Simonsberg to Paarl's main street and the Paarl Mountain area.
• Sir Lowry's Pass and Clarence Drive: from Somerset West, cross the pass on the N2 or follow the coast on the R44 from Gordon's Bay towards Kleinmond.

Stellenbosch is about 35 km from Cape Town International. Take the N2 towards Somerset West, then the R310 (or the R44 via Somerset West) into town: roughly 35 to 40 minutes outside peak traffic. From the city centre it's about 50 km, or 45 minutes to an hour. The route is on main roads all the way. Avoid the N2 between about 16:00 and 18:30 on weekdays, when traffic heading out of the city is heavy.

If you're arriving late, ask about an after-hours handover (fee shown in your quote) or have us meet you at the airport and drive there yourself.

• Mercedes-Benz C-Class (R1,499 a day): comfortable and easy to park in town, with room for two people's luggage and a few cases of wine.
• BMW X5 or Range Rover Sport: more space and a higher driving position for families, golf clubs and the odd farm road to a cellar door.
• BMW iX or Volvo EX30: quiet and unhurried on the passes, with unlimited kilometres; ask your estate about overnight charging.
• Mercedes-Benz Vito: for groups of up to seven, ideally with a chauffeur on tasting days.
